I wouldn't say that I'm handling this well.
I'm really holding out hope that he'll re-sign with the Flyers over the summer. The information I'm hearing about that being a possibility is very mixed, so who knows.
But this commercial from the All-Star game is kind of cute. It definitely didn't make things better, but it made me not pout for about 3 seconds. Enjoy it.
I learned something new yesterday. If the Army v. Navy football game is happening at Lincoln Financial Field and you've got tickets to the Flyers game at 7:30 that same night, you should be in the Wachovia Center parking lot like two and a half hours before the game. No joke. Thinking that MAYBE we'd miss some of the traffic leaving the Army v. Navy game, we departed from Oregon Avenue around 6:20-ish - for over an hour we sat in traffic coming down Delaware Avenue. We saw all kinds of hostility and pandemonium going on around us. A bunch of people just ditched their cars on the side of the road and walked to the Wachovia Center. They're braver than I am. I don't know how many times I said the phrase "NOW WHAT IS THAT GUY DOING?? That's not even a lane!"
We missed the warm-ups, missed intros, missed the anthem, missed the two Flyer goals and Ben Eager's fight. We ate hot dogs on the concourse during the rest of the first period because we didn't want to annoy our row-mates by trying to get to our seats. Those people probably have no clue how considerate we are.
Another loss. *sigh* A shootout loss! That was the first one I saw in person and for some reason it was less nerve wracking than watching it on TV.
On the way out I got cat-called by a group of pre-teens. I might have been offended if it hadn't been so ridiculous. We also watched a cop chew out a Devil fan who tried to drive through a pedestrian crossway. THAT was funny. Everyone trying to cross the street stopped to watch and the cop got a big cheer. We all needed SOMETHING to cheer about.
I'll be seeing them play the Crapitals on Saturday - MAYBE I'll be able to write about what it's like to see my Flyers win in person. I've been to several games this season and not one of them has been a win...maybe I'm the problem?
In other news, I go back to my ortho on Friday. He wants to talk about the results of my CT scan. Everyone is all "YOU'RE GOING TO NEED SURGERY!" I have no idea what he's going to recommend. All I know is that the ankle pain was so bad on Wednesday night that it kept me up until 1:30am. At this point, I'm willing to do just about anything to fix this problem.
Well I learned something new last night. Apparently my Nikon isn't really allowed at the Wachovia Center. At least, that's kinda what I picked up on from the security guard.
We were going in the building and I stopped to let the guard check my purse. Since the camera was taking up a lot of room and blocking his view into my bag, I started taking the camera out. He said something like "it's okay, just make sure you put the camera back in the bag before you get inside." I think I just gave him some baffled, wide-eyed look and nodded.
But wouldn't you know it - I left my memory cards at home. Perfect. :( The little pocket-sized Canon was on hand though, so I took a couple of random shots with it. Not fantastic for distance shots, but oh well! Speaking of cameras and camera-related topics, I swapped out that lens order with Ritz. I'm getting the Nikkor 70-300 VR instead. The 18-200 is a good all-purpose, but I wanted a higher zoom. Good stuff.
Warming up.
Forsberg stretches. Jones, Meyer and Niittymaki chat. Umberger waits.
Richards and Grenier.
Anyway, whilst watching the game and walking around during intermissions, I noticed a lot of interesting cameras with VERY questionable lens attachments. One guy had a lens that was easily over a foot long. During warm ups, I noticed a lot of people near the glass with some serious lenses. Next week I'm going to just go up to one of those people and ask them what the deal is. You never know until you ask, right?
The game? It was rough. The first period was a disaster. The booing and yelling from the fans made for a pretty ugly scene. This was on Philly.com this morning...
"We're not playing good enough to make them cheer," Forsberg said. "I would be the same way, too."
Please start winning games. Please.
Ovechkin got the first star of the game. He skated the width of the ice and passed his stick over the glass to a kid. It got a cheer from the handful of us who were still there and he gave a wave. He'll be a fan favorite when he ends up playing for the Red Wings or the Rangers.
Went to see my Flyers lose to the Penguins last night. It was brutal so we left before the third period got underway.
Thoughts: I don't think the Flyers are playing that poorly. Honestly. They're working hard - it just seems like they can't catch one single break. Malkin is really good. So is Crosby - I'm not going to join the bitter "Crosby Sucks" camp. Hat tricks don't come by accident. I still can't figure out how Forsberg and Gagne collided the way they did. The way it led to a short-handed, unassisted goal by the Pens just plain hurt.
Took some pictures of warm-ups with my old camera.
Stretch!
Mike Richards works hard on every shift - no matter how poorly the game is going. I appreciate that.
He's a perpetual motion machine during warm-ups.
During the game, I watched a truly disgusting display going on in the row infront of me. Guys in the their 20's hitting on two girls - WHOSE MOM WAS SITTING NEXT TO THEM. The girls, in my estimation, were like 16 or 17 years old. There was this exchange:
Guy: How old do you think I am? (Um, CREEPSHOW!)
Girl: I don't know, like 28? 29?
Guy: I'm 22. Thanks.
In the girl's defense, the dude had a receeding hairline that I've seen very few 22 year old's sport.
I've got a truly stellar day of report building to do. I haven't decided if I'd accomplish more of it at home or at the office. Maybe if I hadn't shot my mouth off by saying that I could get it done by Monday, I wouldn't have to work on it at all today. Then I could just lay around like a slug and watch football all day. You know, like a normal person.
Okay, enough slacking. I need to get some lunch, get some gasoline in the car and buckle down with this stupid report.
First the Eagles lose (JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH. How did Tampa Bay make that field goal at the end??? HOW???). As far as I'm concerned, no good comes out of a trip to Tampa Bay. That's where Forsberg sprained his wrist. Coincidence? No.
So my brother and I, good and dejected, decide we need to get dinner. We weren't ready to leave yet, so I get on my computer to check email. But for whatever reason (gut instinct), I check philadelphiaflyers.com first and see "Forsberg Reacts to Changes."
Hitchcock being fired...as much as I liked Hitch, I was sort of expecting that one. But Bobby Clarke resigning? The guys on Satellite Hot Stove last night said it would probably happen, but I was in a total state of denial.
You have to understand - I was raised to worship and idolize Bobby Clarke. No matter how much grief he got from Philadelphia media or fans about some of his decisions, I always believed in him. Despite the horrible record at the moment, I had faith that he would right the wrong.
I don't even know what to think right now. My brother and I eventually ended up at Arthur Treachers (comfort food central). I sat there, picking at my food, wearing sunglasses the entire time and in clothes that could very easily be put in the category of PJs. I'm not handling this day very well. Depending on how I wake up tomorrow, I may or may not put in an appearance at work. No, I am not overreacting.
